PSND Unravels Solutions for Health and Nutrition for 2020 Virtual Convention

#PSND2020Convention #Virtual PUSH Nutrition: PSND Unravels Solutions for Health and Nutrition

When the new decade unfolds before us this 2020, we were overwhelmed by the news every week including the Taal Volcano Eruption; Polio outbreak; growing mental health concerns among youth; bush fires on Australia, Indonesia and the Amazon; and of course the emergence of the COVID-19 global pandemic. These events escalated our uncertainties which affected our decisions in planning, implementation of plans and ways forward in the future. However, one thing that matters in all these uncertainties is the importance of good health and proper nutrition. This year in time of the COVID-19 pandemic and the new normal condition the Philippine Society of Nutritionist-Dietitians (PSND), Inc. choose the theme PUSH Nutrition: PSND Unravels Solutions for Health and Nutrition to discuss ways, approaches and strategies in the pursuit of maintaining and improving proper health and nutrition in times of the new normal. This year we will also elect a new set of PSND Officers for 2021-2022. We hope that this annual convention, which for the first time will be undertaken virtually, will not only provide you with relevant information, may it also uplift our drive in promoting proper health and nutrition particularly in trying times.

PSND Collaborates with different Stakeholders in developing Nutrition Practice Guidelines (NPG)

PSND participated in the development of Nutrition Practice Guidelines (NPG) on screening and management of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) for health professionals in the Primary Care Setting was spearheaded by the Nutritional Assessment and Monitoring Division of Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI) – DOST.

These NPGs will be used to standardize the nutrition management of specific disease conditions intended for health professionals and health workers in the primary care setting such as health centers or Rural Health Units (RHUs) since this is where most people in the community go to avail services either for check-up or follow-up consultation.

The initial step conducted in the development of NPGs is the creation of the Technical Working Group (TWG) composed of professionals, practitioners, researches and experts from DOST-FNRI technical staff, national agencies and representatives of health and nutrition organizations. PSND Vice President, Ms. Anna Orillo and PSND Auditor, Ms. Donnabelle Navarrete enlisted in the hypertension group where they rendered their expertise.Continue reading

PSND, Inc. donates bags to BolunTurismo PH

What used to be a convention surplus to some turned out to be school bags for others.

This year, the Philippine Society of Nutritionist-Dietiatians, Inc. (PSND, Inc.) came up with a new way of using the excess convention bags—something far away from the ordinary. PSND partnered with BolunTurismo PH to use the excess bags for the school supplies for children living in far-flung areas in the province of Romblon. The activity was conducted last 26-30 May 2017.

Out of the 290 children who benefitted from the donations, 73 children received school supplies placed inside the PSND bags while other children received bags from different donors. These bags were given to children in Sibuyan Island and Canduyong Elementary School who have to walk for approximately 1 to 2 hours going to school and another 1-2 hours going back home. Thus, a sturdy bag, instead of their usual plastic bag will be very helpful to transport their school supplies safely from their homes in the mountains down to their schools.  Most of these children belong to indigenous groups.Continue reading
